Anthony Kujawa Obituary

Anthony "Tony" J. Kujawa

April 15, 1938 - August 27, 2024

BARABOO - Anthony "Tony" J. Kujawa, 86, of Baraboo, WI passed away on August 27, 2024. He was born April 15, 1938 in Milwaukee, WI, and was a graduate of Don Bosco High School (1956).

He graduated from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Class of 1961, received advanced degrees from Roosevelt University in Chicago and UW-Milwaukee, and a Doctorate from UW-Madison.

Tony served 21 years (six years active duty) in the U.S. Navy, advancing to the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

He taught and coached in Milwaukee and held administrative positions in the surrounding schools. He served as District Administrator in the Baraboo School District for 20 years before retiring in 2004, earning respect for his exemplary leadership.

Tony married his first wife, Kathleen in 1966. They were married 38 years until her passing in 2002. They had three children and eight grandchildren. In 2005, he married Sue Eldred, and they shared 19 years of marriage.

Tony is survived by his wife, Sue Eldred-Kujawa; his children: Patrick (Lenore) Kujawa, Peter (Stephanie) Kujawa and Colleen (Carl) Boraca; his grandchildren: Taylor, Brennan, Karina, Ryan, Emma, Henry, Maggie and Theo; his stepdaughters: Rachel and Meg Cychosz; his sister, Nancy Aschenbrenner (late Jerry); and many beloved relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen; his parents, Catherine and Joseph Kujawa; his sister, Dorothy Trzesniewski (late Ray); and other relatives and friends.

Tony lived a life marked by dedication and service, but his greatest legacy is his role in building the Hospice House in Baraboo. Having experienced the challenges faced by caregivers and families when a loved one is dying, Tony dedicated himself to establishing a hospice facility in Baraboo. Under his visionary leadership, a committee of dedicated people raised the funds to have the facility built and it opened in 2005.

After two years in home hospice, Tony spent the last 40 days of his life under the extraordinary care of the dedicated and compassionate staff at the Hospice House he made possible. His wife, Sue, and their entire family wish to express their enormous gratitude to everyone at SSM Hospice, including our hospice team, our dedicated home caregiver, Erwin Bauer, and all those who traveled this journey with us.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Baraboo, with Monsignor Larry Bakke officiating. In recognition of Tony's Military service, Military Honors will be rendered by the Baraboo Veterans Honor Guard following the service. A luncheon will follow at the First Congregational Church, Baraboo, where family and friends are invited to gather and commemorate Tony's life.

A Celebration of Life and Community Gathering will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Baraboo Arts Banquet Hall, Baraboo. The public is welcome to attend.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the family for the Dr. Anthony J. Kujawa Memorial Scholarship established at Baraboo Community Scholarship Corporation.

I learned a lot from Tony over the years and really enjoyed my time with him. We served together on the Wisconsin School Music Association Board and I was lucky to play golf with him several times. He is missed by us all!

In 1989, I was a UW Madison graduate with 5 years of sales and management experience at the now defunct American TV furniture and electronics store in Madison, WI when I made the bold career move to become a wet-behind-the-ears, brand spankin' new, independent financial advisor, with no clients and no money under management. I made 1,500 telephone "cold calls" to individuals and companies before I was able to set up my first face-to-face meeting with a potential client! Tony was one of my first meetings as a result a cold call.

Tony was most cordial on the phone whereas some people either just hung up on me, were rude to me, or even insulted me. In the meeting, he listened to my little presentation very patiently despite his busy day and heavy workload as District Administrator for Baraboo Schools. He was aware that I was brand new to the business. He congratulated me on my choice and encouraged me to persevere in my new endeavor. I left the meeting feeling optimistic about this 180 degree career path I had chosen. 33 years later, I retired from that career (October of 2022). I was grateful to have hundreds of clients and large sums of money under my management when I sold my practice. That may well have not been the case if it weren't for the great selfless man that Tony Kujawa was. Rest in peace my friend, rest in peace.

Tony Kujawa was my first principal when I was a new teacher. He supported me and encouraged me to one day go into school administration. 40 years later of successful school and district leadership, I owe my career to Tony. He was a close friend who always provided advice to me throughout my career. He will be greatly missed!

I had great admiration for Tony when he was administrator of the BSD. Also, experienced good friendship as neighbors with Tony and Kathleen on Bascom Hill, followed by the good fortune of teaching at St Joe´s when he was principal for a year. I was so happy when Tony and Sue found love, as I worked with Sue and she had a good connection with our Joel, from 1st grade on. I am so very grateful
for the gift that Tony was to education in the community and just as a very fine, upstanding person of great integrity. My sympathies to Colleen and brothers, and to Sue and family.

My condolences to the Kujawa Family. While I never met Anthony, having read his obituary I have a sense of the wonderful life he lived. Plus, my friend and colleague Pat is obviously a shining extension of Anthony. May the entire Kujawa Family find comfort, love and solace in beautiful remembrance of him during this difficult time.

It was always a joyful day when one got to spend time with Tony. His sense of humor was present even when his body was slowing down. It has a great pleasure getting to know both Sue and Tony. Go with God faithful servant, your work is done. Rest in the arms of our Lord.
