Ann Castiglione Obituary

Ann Catherine Castiglione (née Arbanasin), 98, native and long time resident of Stockton, passed away on March 14, 2025 in South San Francisco. She was born on June 5, 1926 in Stockton, California to Croatian immigrants John Arbanasin (from near Dubrovnik) and Katherine Arbanasin (née Didovich, from the village of Lumbarda on the island of Korcula). Ann spoke the language and ever cherished her Croatian roots.

Ann grew up with her brothers during the Great Depression. They all had stories of hardship but of good times too. They would speak of taking the streetcar into downtown Stockton and catching a nice lunch and movie all for a quarter. In 1944 they lost their father after he got hit by a truck on his way to work at PG&E. With their older brother away on the Pacific Front in the war, Ann and her brother Robert helped support their widowed mother.

Ann attended St. Mary's High School. She worked first briefly at the Fox Theater and then at David Levinson's clothing store downtown until she married Louis Castiglione in the 1950's. She was a devoted and loving housewife and mother to her daughter Lynette. She was known for the great food she cooked, especially her pesto and cannelloni. She was a member of the choir at St. Luke's. She loved gardening and flowers, especially her many roses.

Ann is survived by her daughter Lynette Castiglione of San Francisco, stepdaughter Shirley Benson (Ray), nephews John and John Nicholas Arbanasin, nieces Katherine and Barbara Arbanasin, and great nephew Mark Arbanasin. Ann is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Louis Ralph Castiglione, her brothers John and Robert Arbanasin, sister-in-laws Pat and Tina Arbanasin, stepdaughter Janet Stevens (Marty), nieces Katherine Brazil (Johnny), Kimberly Silva (Gary), and Donna and Tina Arbanasin.

Casa Bonita Funeral Home is handling the services. Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral Mass and rosary on Tuesday April 8, 2025 at 10:00 a. m. at the Cathedral of the Annunciation, 425 W. Magnolia St., Stockton, CA followed by committal at San Joaquin Catholic Cemetery.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Ann lived around the corner from me when I lived on Sierra Nevada Street. I remember she would walk all the way to the store(s) on Wilson Way. If I was out working in my yard, she'd stop by to say hello. She was always so upbeat and pleasant. When I finally introduced myself, she knew my family name and remembered my (late) father. Rest in peace, dear Ann.

Ann was my neighbor for many years. She was a kind and generous lady. I remember seeing her door open on Sundays and hearing her sing. She always walked to the store and loved being outside watering her flowers. Ann, rest in peace.
