Velma Aiken Obituary
Velma Gennette Aiken, age 73 entered peaceful rest with family by her bedside on Saturday, June 22, 2024, in Jacksonville, Florida.
Velma was born October 13,1950, in Jacksonville, Florida to James and Annie Belle Cook. She was the ninth of eleven children. She was educated in the Duval County School system and attended Stanton Vocational High School. During her life she worked in Retail Management at Steinmart, Murphy's Shoe Store, and Winn Dixie.
She accepted Christ as her personal savior as a young woman and was an active member of Kingdom Cathedral (Formally known as Faust Temple 2 Church), Bishop Marvelle L. Cook, Senior Pastor.
She adored her grandkids and spending time with them. She enjoyed fishing, and often went with her brother Freeman. She loved cooking for the neighborhood and friends enjoyed her "pork pots" at the boat dock and Lonnie C. Miller Park. She was the life of any gathering, singing and dancing. There was no way to be around her and not laugh, as she was comedic. And if there was anything going on in the neighborhood, she was sure to know as she was the self-appointed Neighborhood Watch.
With James Hall, two children were born, Yvette and Terrell. With Samuel Aiken, her husband of thirty-nine years, two sons were born, Rodney and Craig. She was a loving and doting mother to her children who will miss her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Aiken; her son, Terrell Cook; father, James H. Cook, Sr.; mother, Annie Belle Cook; brothers, James Cook, Jr., Hardy Cook, Sam Cook, Huron Cook, Lionel Cook, Freeman Cook, and Hector Cook; sisters, Annette Bryant and Cornelia Jenkins; and grandson, Cravion Aiken.
She is survived by her daughter, Yvette Williams (Derrick); sons, Rodney Aiken and Craig Aiken (Shannon); her sister, Margaret Whitfield; sisters-in-law, Annette Cook, Marguerite Cook and Sarah Cook; god-sister, Alta Parrish; grandchildren, Jerry Smith, Jr. (Brandon), Jacobi Smith (Tayla), Jeremy Smith (Larica), Shadawn Wynn, Kamiyah Mobley, Shakaira Jordan, Craig Aiken, Jr., Jasmine Lewis, Emani Lewis, Shuriah Beckwith, Cassandra Williams, Shantel Williams, and Edward Williams; her close nephew, Henry Bryant, Jr.; close niece, Denise Cook-Butler; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
