Michael Kalis Obituary

Michael Kalis died peacefully on November 12, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. "Pop Pop" was adored by his children, grandchildren, extended family, friends, and even the playmates of his grandchildren. A member in good standing of the Maryland Bar, he joined the Special Forces of the National Guard, which began his lifelong commitment to extensive exercise.

His career began working in his father and grandfather's real estate company. He then went on to diverse positions from running a construction crew, doing workouts for several banks and financing residential home construction.

His philosophy was "be a Mench." He was philanthropic in both time and money, including his commitment to The Associated, Israel, Hebrew Free Loan, the Maryland Food Bank and numerous charities. His generosity extended to everyone he met. With boundless energy and deep compassion, he developed intimate relationships with friends, colleagues and everyone he met, young and old.

Mike is survived by his devoted wife, Sonna Kalis (nee Kamenetz); his loving children, Jennifer (Shane) Morris, David (Karen) Kalis, and Mindy (Nick) Athas; his caring sister, Ilene (Marc) Cohen; and his beloved grandchildren, Lance Morris, Reid Morris, Samantha Kalis, James Athas, Madeline Athas and Jack Athas. He was predeceased by his dear parents, Samuel and Lilyan Kalis.

Services were held at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, 7401 Park Heights Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21208, on Wednesday, November 13th, 2024, at 2:00 pm. Interment Baltimore Hebrew Berrymans Lane Cemetery. Please omit flowers. Contributions in his memory may be sent to the charity of your choice. I am so very sorry to learn of the passing of Mike. I'm a former brother-in-law, and mike was terrific to me. He was kind, and more like a brother than a brother-in-law. He always had a big smile. I'm sure that Michael will be missed by everyone who knows him.

I'm so sorry to hear about my cousin Michael. Growing up Michael would come over to our house and take me for a ride in his Thunderbird convertible. We would go for steamed crabs, Ice Cream and Snowballs. I really miss the Kalis Family.

Growing up Michael was like an older brother to me. He was very important to me and my younger brother especially after our father died. He was unselfish with his time. Jonathan to this day adores and thinks about Michael all the time. We last saw him 8 yrs. ago @ Union Memorial Hospital. It was a good reunion. My sincere sympathy to the whole Kalis family. Ira J. Kalis Cohedn, M.D.
