Robin, as discussed, the story of taking Vince skiing:
Around 2000, Vince was chatting with me about trips in the hills, and two things came up - he hadn't done back-country skiing, and hadn't been to (the old 4th) Mueller Hut at Mt Cook. We agreed to combine those aims the coming winter. A companion recently home from overseas also wanted to come. We set off from Timaru one afternoon (your wedding anniversary Robin?) with a weather window, and with cross-country skis on our packs made our way to the Sealy tarns halfway up the Mueller track, to don our skis. The snow from there was reasonably deep, but good for "skinning on" - where with napped skins attached to the ski bases you walk on top of the snowpack, taking half meter steps sliding the ski uphill, where it grips the snow and you then slide the other foot up past the first. The result is quick and easy travel over top of the snow zig-zagging to about a 20 degree angle up the hill.
I had planned for us to ski to the hut by about 7.30pm for tea. But, it turned out our companion was not well, kept losing their balance, falling, and struggling to regain their skiis, before eventually abandoning their skis exhausted - we had only gained about 200m (Vince waiting ahead having easily mastered the technique) when we had to stack the skiis at the trail side.
Then, taking turns potholing steps, we slogged on foot through the deep snow all the way to the hut arriving at something nearer 2.00am for a very late cook-up of tea (and the inevitable diabetes injection).
Vince always looked on the bright-side of things though (as we then didn't get to do the planned cross-country skiing) as our trip became more about getting our companion safely and happily back down to the village.
Vince summarised the trip as making him the only person he knew of "who only skied going uphill, never down".

I had the privilege of working for Vince for a number of years. Every Friday night my three children took it in turns to come with me for the night surgery. Vince took so much trouble to explain what he was doing and why. One night Vince was operation on a dog. Aaron pulled the chair he was standing on closer and closer and then he said to Vince" Can you move your arm Vince, I can't see" . Vince laughed and moved away! Vince was so kind to me and I look back on my day in North St veterinary clinic with much affection. Vince you were so kind and wise and your sense of humor deadly! Robin and family I hope that you can remember the love he had for you all. He was a very proud father. My love to you all. Marion

To Robin & Family our heartfelt condolences.
From a client, to be friends will miss that wit and verbal sparing, so precious. Squash days and work encounters, so many fond memories. He left a footprint of life's learnings, on so many he accepted into his realm. Vince helped me with higher learning, when i borrowed quality books, that I am thankful for.

Vince was a great friend to us, he had a great sense of humor and taught Marie a lot about the facts of life sitting on a bench outside the Aussie pub in Greymouth. He also showed us how to climb mountains in the middle of winter by going into Welcome flat. Time to rest now Vince, we will miss you. Love
