Along with my beloved Patricia, I was saddened to know that Steve had passed away. Patricia and I enjoyed 3 wonderful months in NZ in 1996-97. We had our own personal experience of his hospitality, aided by Betty, who no sooner did she speak than a feast appeared! The word `libation´ from Steve seems to come to mind readily!

A true gentleman indeed. Forever grateful Steve would let me go in and play the electronic organ whenever I wanted too. Will never forget your generosity.

Him when I worked at Smith's Open Warehouse, Newman's Pianos was opposite. I had a crush on him and he did ask me out one time. I think we went to the movies. I met him again many years later at a function at St Mary's church.

So very sad to hear of Steve's passing. I worked for him at Newmans Pianos for awhile, back in the day, and can honestly say he was probably the best boss I've known. Always smiling, always helpful. He will be missed by all that knew him.
My sincere sympathy to the family.

Steve was my beloved brother - the 4th in line of 5 Newman siblings. I am 2nd in line. There was deep fondness between all of us, despite the distance separating us. The memories shared will live on.

A pure gentleman. I bought lots of musical gear from Steve in the early `90s. He was always generous and helpful with his advice. Just recently I have come to know Lizzy, his daughter through Elloughton Gardens, and she is a happy, fun loving girl, a chip off the old block.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of my uncle Steve. Although we only met a few times on my couple of trips to NZ, he and Betty "Wonder Woman" Manning looked after me with love and kindness. I will hold on to those memories with fondness forever.
My sympathy also goes out to all members of Steve´s family and friends.

My condolences to all the family. As I live in the UK, it's regrettable that I didn't get to know Uncle Steve, but it is fascinating to be part of the Newman family and to know some of their story.

It is with great sadness I see that Steve has passed.
He was a great neighbour who sometimes gave me a lift home from the Hibernian in our young days and he helped out a lot of local musicians including myself. A real legend of Timaru.
