Worked with Ken on various construction jobs around Australia between 1981 to 1988: Newcastle Kurragang Island Coal Loader, Raymond Terrace Aluminium Smelter potline, Nanango (Kingaroy) Tarong Power Station, being a few.
We were part of a travelling construction crew (about 25 men), a real 'united nations' of nationalities, who were like family - who watched out for each other on and off field.
Ken was a crane operator - a good one. I went on to Egypt while Ken went to the Northwest. We met again in 2015 in Carterton NZ when he dropped in out of the blue. He told me a bit about the Northwest then. It sounded like the cranes were pretty big and the work was much more sophisticated.
One long weekend in Oz, me and Ken traveled inland from Kingaroy to Roma and St George then home again - about 4 days of driving.
He was a good mate, his own man and well respected especially in our work 'family'.
A gruff exterior hid a golden heart. Godspeed Ken RIP.
