Fly free in the great unknown Ian.You always took an interest in what i was up to.Always willing to give & share advice, esp. in farming. You didnt suffer fools gladly, but the twinkle in your eyes & wee smile said so much. Rest in peace.

Lovely man. I knew him briefly in the 80's over deer business but he was a friend of my brother, through Pirates rugby and Otago stock firm connections. Like all Otago boys he was a rugby hero to me as a schoolboy, particularly on the Whineray tour, and when he scored his 2 tries against the Springboks.
I just missed seeing him in Mooloolaba recently and heard he wasn't good, so I'm very sad to hear he's gone.
Good footballer, good man.

Deepest Sympathies to the Smith Family. I remember growing up in the 70s when Spooky lived in Southland and my dad Colin and spooky and friends who were stock agents and farmers raced several racehorses together. They won a number of races and had a lot of fun together. Horses like Ice Pack.Sudden Change . Cockatoo to name a few. They always kept in touch and I can remember as a kid calling into Peel Forest on family holiday from Invercargill and visiting. My Dad has little sight these days but would ring Spooky every couple of months to catch up. It was so good that Spooky was in Invercargill only a couple weeks ago and made it to a lunch Dad organised for all the old ex stock agents around Southland. Spooky was a very popular and supprise guest who I'm sure would of enjoyed catching up with old friends and work colleagues he hadn't seen in years. Hold onto the memories I know Dad will miss having his yarns with Spooky.
Regards
Peter and Colin Maynard and families
