Gregory SUTHERLAND Obituary

SUTHERLAND,
Gregory Paul (Greg):
On Saturday, December 5, 2020, Greg left this earth, surrounded by his loving family. Following a tragic accident on Stewart Island, doing what he loved, Greg fought courageously for two weeks, allowing his family precious time to say goodbye before leaving to be with Jesus. The most amazing and loving best friend and husband to Julie. Incredible dad to Casey, Peta and Antony. Extraordinary grandad to Brooklyn, Taye and Asher. Much loved son of Jeanette, and Dennis (deceased) and son-in-law of Margaret, and David Sinclair (deceased). Wonderful brother and brother-in-law to Lyndon and Kathryn, Karen and Pete Muir, Myke and Warren, Jamie and Justine Sinclair, Graham and Melinda Sinclair, Mary Ann, and Brent Peatey (deceased), and Anne and Trevor Gardiner. A very special uncle, nephew, mentor, and everyone's best friend! A celebration of this incredible man's life will take place on Friday, December 11, 2020, at 1.00pm, Hilton View, 1090 Earl Road, Geraldine. Please be brightly dressed for Greg's service. In lieu of flowers donations to the Rescue Helicopter would be greatly appreciated and may be left at the service. Messages to the Sutherland family, c/- Aoraki Funeral Services, PO Box 4091, Timaru 7924.

Dear Greg one very special guy, always there with a ready smile and willing to help in the best way he knew how with compassion, understanding, innovation and humour. Whenever Greg's name comes up, and it has a lot, especially over the last few weeks, there are so many stories of him and the listeners are wiping tears of laughter from their eyes as they hear them. That's Greg...he would love that he has turned sadness into laughter.... long may those wonderful stories continue. And to his family: thank you for sharing your beloved Greg with all of us here in the Mackenzie and at Aoraki...he will be on your shoulders looking out for you every step of the way; of that we are sure...Thanks Greg too, for letting me off that ticket with a few words of caution. Bless you! With great love, Mary and Charlie H xx

It was a privilege to have met Greg, your son, husband, Dad and brother last year as he tended to my Mother, after she too passed away following an accident. His wonderful compassion, humility, humour and knowledge made this difficult time in our lives much easier and memorable....his ability to read our family circumstances and the legalities required were amazing and we couldn't thank him enough. We even had his touches of humour ....He certainly made many lives richer by his much too short but memorable life...such a big loss to everyone... Kind Regards Sue and Lindsay Wallace

So sad to learn of Greg's death. He and Julie did an awesome job as funeral directors at my mother Margaret Hall's funeral 02.06.2020. What a class act. Every aspect covered and executed with kindness, compassion and care. This world is so much less for you not being in it Greg. Sincere condolences to Julie, family, friends, colleagues and all Greg came in contact with. He made our lives so much better. Thank you and farewell Greg. Rest in Peace.

Dear Peta, & Anthony and to your family I'm sorry to hear about the passing of your Dad. I never really knew him but from what I've read on here he was pretty incredible dad and great fella to those who knew him and the community. My condolences and sympathies are with you both during this time.

My 1st encounter with Greg was when he was a police officer in Fairlie. I was a school bus driver doing the Tekapo School run fill in for Chrissy, up ahead I saw a police car and a chap got out, he laid down in the middle of the road, on pulling up and opening the doors, he was shocked and said oops your not Chrissy. The children on the bus were laughing and said oh thats Greg he does funny stuff like that... I drove away thinking what a decent officer, was good for a laugh. So sorry for all the family at this tragic loss of a good guy.

Sending love and prayers to you all at this sad time. I only met Greg in a professional capacity as a funeral director, with the passing of my father, and a few others, I always came away thinking what a lovely caring man he was. He will be a huge loss to the community.

I first met Greg in 1997 in Twizel and was always impressed by his humour and cheeky personality. He did such a great job with my Mums funeral last year, and it's just unbelievable that this should happen to such a positive, energetic and fun person. Way too early, tragic. Love and Thoughts to Julie and his family.
