Alan WILLIAMS Obituary

WILLIAMS, Alan Leslie:
On March 3, 2021 Alan passed away peacefully at The Margaret Wilson Home, Timaru, aged 92 years. He was looked after brilliantly by the wonderful team there. The family would like to announce a posthumous gold medal for Alan's services to his community and family since 1928. Alan was Dawn's dearly loved husband for 70 years 4 months. A loved and cherished dad to Grant and Felicity, Brent and Jacqui, Jenny and Geoff, Chris and Debbie. Much loved Grandad to Clemency and Yann, Samuel and Coco, Adrian, Tim and Ben, Jono and Amanda, and Alie, Olivia, Harrison, and Alicia. Loved Great Grandad to Pierre, Gabriel and Lily, Hinoki and Keyaki. Dad's life touched so many more, too many to mention here. Please all have a toast (strong cup of tea) to Alan. For those of you who knew Alan, he loved a chat, always had a smile on his face, but did not like a fuss, so at his request, a private service will be held later in the year. All messages to Dawn, who we expect will be receiving a card from the Queen in the years to come. Thanks to Betts Funeral Services for dealing with the formalities. Dawn Williams, C/- Margaret Wilson Home, 6a Orbell Street, Timaru.

We were neighbours for 17 yrs and they were such a lovely couple. Always kind, smiling and never wanting to be a concern to anyone. Our daughter liked to walk up to the supermarket with Alan, in his scooter, to help him reach the groceries from the high and low shelves and put them away for Dawn. We and our daughters have missed Alan and Dawn since they moved away. So sorry to hear of Alan's passing and we send our love to Dawn at this sad time.

Alan and Dawn both took me into their family during a very formative and deeply meaningful period of my life. They were both always so accepting, warm and generous with their home, their time and their hearts.

My own Dad (Percy), who passed away a year ago, along with Mum (Joyce), always had very special memories of Alan and were forever grateful to him for his thoughtful and solid support for them during their time in Timaru, especially during their period of settling in. Percy loved fishing with Alan, and learned so much from him. Mum has asked me to express, too, how highly she valued Alan's ability to inspire those around him with his own focused energy; she told me you could see it in his ability to make things that needed to be done actually happen, for example in mustering folks for working bees - always with great results - that were really appreciated by participants and beneficiaries alike.

Timaru has lost a beautiful man. And he'll live on in all those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Our loving thoughts are with Dawn and the whole family.

Uncle Alan was the slightly younger brother of my father Geoff who would have been 94 now so dredged up a few memories. Alan what an inspiration you and Dawn have been with your love for each other and wider family and local community. It was great to chat with Grant a few evenings ago. Fond love Dawn and family. Uncle Alan was an inspiration to me because of his unwavering Christian faith. He was that tree planted by streams of water giving shelter to many small birds.

You never failed to make me smile, Grandad. Even though I couldn't see you all the time, the times we had will never be forgotten.
Love you always, Alicia
