STANLEY BECK Obituary

STANLEY M. BECK August 9, 1934 - December 18, 2023 Peacefully, at the age of 89, after a long life well-lived. Stanley was born in Vancouver, the youngest child of Ralph and Freda Beck. Predeceased by his sister and brother, Sheila and Howard. Stanley grew up in Vancouver, and studied law at UBC and then at Yale, where he earned an LLM. He joined the Faculty of Law at UBC before moving east to continue his academic career, first at Queen's and then at Osgoode Hall Law School, where he served as dean from 1977-1982. He was Professor Beck to a generation of lawyers who benefitted from his teaching and scholarship. He left academia to serve as chair of the Ontario Securities Commission and later built a successful mediation and arbitration practice. Stanley leaves his beloved wife of 54 years, Barbara. He was a loving father to Carolyn (Neal) and Lindsay, and a proud grandfather to Simon, Mitchell, Nathaniel and Clara. He also leaves a niece and nephews in Seattle, and their families. We will miss his keen intellect, his dry humour and gentle nature. Special thanks to those who provided Stanley with such compassionate care in his final days, in particular the wonderful palliative care nurses at Toronto Grace Hospital. Donations in Stanley's memory may be made to the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care 416-586- 8203 www.tlcpc.org or Mazon Canada 416-683-7554 www.mazoncanada.ca. I grew up across the street from the Beck Family and we had a lot of fun as children riding bikes and playing games. My deepest sympathy for your loss. Stanley was such a kind and generous man.

Stanley will be remembered by all who knew him as the caring, gentle, man that he always was. We wish that we were close enough to be with you, so that we could wrap our arms around you, Barbara. He will be greatly missed.
