Dear Sharyn, Rachael, Suzie and Sonja. I can't begin to express my shock at today's reading of Howard's passing. A true shock to me! Like many here, I always considered Howard more like close friend, than the client of a young lad, starting off in the stock agent world all those years ago. Howard and Sharyn always made me feel welcome and provided some of my earliest work & learning opportunities for which I will always be forever grateful.
Even in retirement to the outskirt of Christchurch, you both were always on my list of friends to call in and say hi to while on my work travels. A big grinned welcome, a cheeky comment & a hot cuppa along with the best home baking ever, was always on offer.
A true gentleman, a loving father, a honest down to earth good bugger...that's how I will always remember a good friend, Howard Oscar Bailey.

Rest in Peace.

Uncle Howard
You are my mentor and role model, the person I aspired to be like. Your fun nature, sense of humour and tolerance was amazing. I have a lifetime of Memories from my childhood with you, Grannie and Grandad at Bicknor and through to present times at Rolleston. I will miss our regular chats on the phone. Coming home will never be the same.
I'm sorry I can't be there to carry you to your resting place. You can rest easy now mate, the hard work is done. Until we meet again. We'll miss you.
Love your nephew Richard and the rest of the West Australian Family, Sue, Thomas and Jessica.

My deepest sympathy doesn't even start to express how I feel. Sharyn Rachael, Suzie and Sonn a hugely gaping hole left in your lives. I am pleased that Howard is no longer in pain, cause that's something he didn't want. All my life his hugs expressed so much to me. There's 1,000s of wonderful memories right from when I was very little. His patience, humour, practicality knowledge and mostly his sense of fairness and family values was incredibly important. Rest in peace Howard love you so much Cynthia Kieran Shaunice and Nyla.

Howard, you have been a role model for me - and I imagine for many other men and women. Yeah, a quiet, capable farmer sufficiently brave for changing direction and location when events and life cycles combined. When you came to work at ANNAND Company I got more than I expected. Not only your knowledge of region and possessor of manna in S. Canterbury that made ABA look good by association, but also agricultural know-how. And the ability and the will to learn and take aboard new technologies - stem shortener and bird scarers, PalmPilots and digital cameras, email attachments and shared file systems. For those fortunate to work with you, you provided the calmest voice of reason and practical solution, always ready and able to be flexible with days and hours and places. I knew that I could pursue new directions or make changes and whatever these were, Howard would adapt and accommodate. And you have been self-assured enough to offer constructive suggestions on how things might be done better. A peoples' person, a man's man, a template for daughters assessing their own men, pretty wife Sharyn's stalwart knight, a reliable provider and constant defender and protector.
This is sounding a lot like an epitaph, I'm sorry for that. Hey, its too late if only others can hear it and they know all this anyway.
Your New Zealand-ness and your unique Howard-ness has informed my own impressions and then my actions as an new New Zealander. Almost immediately upon our meeting you became a valued friend and ally. The role model thing arose as we worked together and I observed and took aboard what you taught by your actions and examples.

Go softly, my friend. The family and whanau are an enduring legacy, to be admired for a very long time.
