I Have leased land from Carlyle for 45 years. Only had a couple of yarns a year but found him very knowledgeable, friendly and always good to deal with. He was a good manager of the land and had great foresight. Many times we rammed wells down at Waipopo for Carlyle. I insisted it was good will but Carlyle being the type of man he was always arrived with a bottle of good whisky which was greatly appreciated except for the odd sore head! He always spoke of his family which showed how proud he was of them. Please accept my condolence to the family for the loss of a much respected Man. Alan Newton, Waipopo Farm

I worked with Carl at Smithfield in the 1960s and 1970s.He was our union delegate for a number of years. I admired his no nonsense approach, his confidence and oratory skills. My Aunty who lived at Epworth at the time, said as a young man, how much he enjoyed going to the local dances and noted what a good looking young man he was.She is now 90yrs of age.
Please accept my heatfelt sympathy to all the family. The end of an era.
